How to get my child to stop waking up in the middle of the night
There are two primary reasons why your child is waking up in the middle of the night. It could be one or the other or a combination of both.
1. They aren't falling asleep independently at bedtime.
If this is part of the issue you can either be patient and work through the strategy you've chosen which will help to get you out of their bedtime process or you can fast-forward the process. This could mean, moving to the hallway if you're doing Camping or switching to Silent Return. If you're doing Silent Return, this is a sign that you may need to limit the number of exits.
2. They are getting too much attention during the overnight wake up.
Make sure you are being Sleepy Mommy/Sleepy Daddy overnight. And make sure that your co-parent is on the same page as you. Inconsistency between parents is where some attention can sneak in and prevent things from improving.
Common forms of attention that may seem small but can encourage overnight wake ups: holding hands, quick hug, words of reassurance, pulling up covers, giving in to a quick request like a sip of water, finding a missing lovey, quick kiss
